The Greene County Ram eighth grade football team opened the season with a loss to Gilbert, 30-0, at Karber Field in Grand Junction Sept. 8.
According to coach Tanner Lawton, the offense struggled to put together consistent drives, although there were bright spots passing and carrying the ball.
Lawton provided the following offensive stats: Conner Whipple 2-10 passing for 25 yards, three carries for 11 yards; Brady Stauffer eight carries for 15 yards and one catch for 8 yards; Jaxson Warnke eight carries for 40 yards; Makayla Kafer four carries for 12 yards; Tanner Allen one carry for 4 yards; Cam Miller three carries for 14 yards and one catch for 3 yards; and Ethan Long one carry for 7 yards.
“The defense played well, having to defend a short field most of the game. Aside from two big plays they really settled in and defended well,” the coach said.
Defensive stats were Tanner Allen five tackles; Brady Stauffer five tackles, one fumble recovery, one interception; Kafer and Warnke, four tackles; Miller three tackles, one interception; Zach Goff, three tackles, one fumble recovery; Whipple, Kaleb Hoyle, Clay Peters, Avery Bardole, and Long, three tackles each; Cody Maston two tackles; and Peyton Kinsey one tackle
“We will regroup as a team this coming week and hopefully get some kids healthy after injuries in the first game. This team has come a long way since our first practice two and a half weeks ago,” Lawton said.
The eighth grade Ram team hosts Perry at Karber Field Sept. 16.
The eighth grade girls volleyball team played at Gilbert on Monday, Sept. 12. The Rams faced a strong serving team and struggled with their serve reception, according to coach Teresa Green. The Rams ended the night with one win and eight losses.
Scores for the A squad were 8-21, 11-21, 3-21. Scores for the B squad were 7-21, 10-21, 10-21 and C squad scores were 10-21, 22-20, 10-21.
Overall, the Rams served 76 for 107 for 71 percent with 12 aces. Top servers include Paige Egeland, 7 for 7 for 100 percent; Brooke Diekmann, 20 for 22 or 91 percent with four aces; Gaige Butlerm 10 for 11 for 91 percent with two aces; Lillian Muir, 8 for 10 for 80 percent; and Eliza Carlson, 7 for 9 for 78 percent with four aces.
The team runs a 5-1 offense with Egeland and Diekmann setting. “We continue to improve and run our offense,” Green said.
The eighth grade teams hosts Nevada Sept. 13 at 4:30 pm.
